Why fortnightly budgeting is different

Most bills are billed monthly, but most Australians are paid fortnightly. That mismatch is the source of a lot of money stress: a bill lands in a pay cycle with no pay, or two big bills land in the same cycle and wipe out the spare cash.

A fortnightly budget fixes this by planning around pay cycles, not calendar months.

Step 1: List your income

Write down every source of income and when it arrives. If you're paid fortnightly, note the net (after-tax) amount you actually receive. If your income varies, use a conservative average.

Step 2: List your fixed bills

Capture every recurring bill, its amount and its due date. Include the monthly ones (rent, mortgage, phone, subscriptions), the quarterly ones (utilities), and the annual ones (car registration, insurance, rates).

Step 3: Plan for irregular costs

Annual and irregular costs are what catch people out. Divide each annual cost by 26 to get the amount to set aside each fortnight. Setting that small amount aside every pay turns a large surprise into a non-event.

Step 4: Allocate savings and debt

Decide before payday what you'll put towards savings and any debt above the minimum. Paying yourself first โ€” even a small amount โ€” is what turns a budget into progress.

Step 5: Review each payday

Spend a few minutes each payday on your dashboard. Check what's due before the next pay, record what came in and went out, and adjust. A budget you revisit fortnightly stays honest.

The Payday Compass workbook brings all of these steps into one organised spreadsheet, with calculated totals and a Bills Calendar that lines due dates up against your pay.
