How exchange rates affect your holiday budget

A practical guide to how exchange rates move the real cost of a holiday, and how to plan a travel budget across more than one currency.

By Payday Compass·

Why the exchange rate changes your trip cost

When you spend overseas, your Australian dollars are converted into the local currency. If the AUD buys more of that currency, your trip costs less in AUD terms; if it buys less, the same trip costs more.

Plan in two currencies

For each destination, estimate costs in the local currency first (flights, accommodation, food, transport, activities), then convert to AUD using a recent exchange rate. This shows the true cost and makes it easier to compare destinations.

Watch for conversion costs

The rate you see online is usually the mid-market rate. Card providers and exchange services add margins and fees, so the amount you actually pay will differ. Check your card's foreign transaction fees before you travel.

Build a buffer

Exchange rates move. Adding a small buffer to your holiday budget means a rate change won't blow your plan. Setting aside a little each payday towards a holiday fund smooths the cost.

Where to check rates

Use a reputable source for indicative rates, and always confirm the actual rate and fees with your provider before transacting. This guide is general information, not financial advice.
